Die-hard hikers assault Fuji from the coast
It was a 22-hour hike from the sea to the top of Japan's highest peak, starting out in scorching summer heat and ending with the temperature near zero. Joe Pournovin and Linton Rathgen's crazy idea was shared by six others at 6:15 a.m. July 17 when they met together at Tagonoura Beach near the foot of Mount Fuji in Shizuoka Prefecture.

The Arenal Volcano is considered one of the ten most active volcanoes in the world. Located in north-western Costa Rica, this volcano affords visitors a chance to see a volcano erupt, but from a safe distance. A guide runs the tram, and is able to stop it along the way for you to snap a photo of a particular scene or animal. At the top, there is an observation deck that affords an amazing view of the surrounding area. Visitors can then decide how they want return to the base; they can either take the Sky Tram back down, or brave the Sky Trek: a Canopy Tour of cables that zigzag across the mountainside and back down to the base.

Another great way to enjoy the biodiversity in the region surrounding the Arenal Volcano area are the Arenal Hanging Bridges. This environmentally friendly structure takes visitors through a beautiful section of the primary rain forest, where they can enjoy the birds, wildlife, flowers and lush vegetation that flourish at the base of the volcano. Traveling the complete circuit that the hanging bridges make at a slow place takes about 2 hours. Guides are on hand to take you through the network, pointing out interesting species and wildlife, and special early morning bird-watching and late night nocturnal tours are available as well.
