Jordan Gowing, a senior religion major, is among the approximately 200 students from Northwestern College, Orange City, Iowa, who travelled across the U.S. and around the world for the college’s annual Spring Service Projects (SSP) March 6-15. This is rural community settled in the mountains of Carazo, 100 years ago the first dwellers begun to arrive to these incredible lands. The role of these cooparative is to help create a sustainable work for the entire community, they are working at the moment in 3 main areas which are: creating new income by: promoting tourism and creating new forms of income such as turning their houses into lodge, providing restaurant services, tourist guides, renting horses for horse back riding, artisians, and ornamental flowers or plants that they sell to the visitors. Conservation and reforestation: Now they realize they live in bless inviromment, with amazing sceneries, 7 springs which create new rivers, excellent soil for agriculture, but at the same time they know the importance of preserving the soil, forest and water bodies, along with the fauna that lives within the land. They are working closely with other NGO's in order to preserve, control and develop a better and organized system for the whole community to take adventage of the enviromment whitout harming the nature and the creatures within, creating awareness among the communtiy towards the enviromment. Other issues: Waste management, bottling spring water, total reforestation, protection of the wild life, and organizing the land for the dwellers. With a high unemployement rate in Nicaragua, rural comunities have turn to Rural Comunity tourism as an alternative for survival. Because of limited knowledge and resources any help is most than welcome.
