Mercer Consulting releases a Quality of Living city ranking report each year, this year being slightly altered as it now contains a new chart called Eco-City Ranking. In the main report Toronto faired fairly well, ranking 16th in the world and 3rd in North America, unluckily this good news doesn't go on, as the new chart clearly shows.

This chart recognized the finest cities in terms of water availability and drinkability, waste removal, class of sewage systems, air pollution and traffic congestion. To sum up, if your city creates large amounts of pollution and doesn't use its renewable resources then it's not going to rank very high. Industrial cities such as Pittsburgh and Düsseldorf beat Toronto, which only came in at 39, not brilliant news. Reducing the figures down to some extent, Toronto only came in 11th when linking it to the North American cities. The city with world's best ecology standards is Calgary, pursued by Honolulu and both Ottawa and Helsinki receiving the bronze medal. Montreal and Vancouver ranked side by side in 13th spot.

While in the light of our 16th place in overall ranking the Eco-City ranking may seem of minor importance, we have to be aware of the gap. "A city's eco-status or attitude toward sustainability can have significant impact on the quality of living of its inhabitants", was the points made by a senior researcher at Mercer and that's what we should to be looking at.

The figures without doubt show that our environmental quality of life is influencing our overall quality of life - not good.
