With no more goals, regulation ended and an extra-time was held to decide which team would qualify for the semifinals. During the extra-time both teams kept fighting but a foul from Roman Torres, who kicked high at Kenny Cooper’s chest, gave the USA an opportunity for a penalty kick. Kenny Cooper performed the penalty kick, closing the game with the goal. The final score of 2-1 gave the Americans their qualification for the Gold Cup semifinals. At the end of the game, coach and manager Bob Bradley expressed his satisfaction at the effort brought by his players and hoped that they would have enough time to recover for their semifinals match on Thursday against Honduras. "It was a challenge to the team to be in that spot at halftime and I still felt good that the response was strong. When we didn't finish the game in regulation, you still got a sense the mentality was ‘we're going to take care of this thing.’ The players deserve a lot of credit for that," Bradley stated. On the other hand, midfielder Beckerman said that this game against Panama took a lot from his teammates, especially because some of his them hadn’t played an over-time game in a long time.
